If you've spent more than a few seconds on our website, you know that J. Fox Custom offers free custom design consultations. These include:
- A private, one-on-one meeting
- Usually a few rough sketches
- A discussion of price, and possibilities
- A set of photo-realistic renderings
Did you know that most jewelers charge for these services? In fact, our research shows that the vast majority of jewelers charge hundreds or even thousands of dollars before you ever get to see a rendering of your idea!
Don't just take our word for it.
We asked more than 50 jewelers in the Boerne / San Antonio area, as well as elsewhere in the US, what they would charge for a custom design consultation and initial set of renderings.
The majority will speak with you, and put together some sort of rough estimate at no charge (although we did find a couple who charge up to $125 just for that), but if you want to actually see your idea, well, better grab your wallet!
To see a render of your idea, 92.2% of the jewelers we spoke with would charge you an average of $360.
While nearly all of these jewelers do say they will apply that money towards the sale when you choose to move forward, keep in mind that every single one of them also says these charges are non-refundable.
That means you pay before seeing what they can do with your ideas, and if you aren't satisfied, you've spent hundreds (or more) with nothing tangible to show for it.
Is "free" really free?
We're proud to be in the 7.8% of jewelers who offer these services at no charge, but we understand you may find yourself asking: Is "free" really free? Well...
Yes!
We are sincerely dedicated to each project, and confident that we can bring your dreams to life. We discuss things beforehand to make sure we're a good fit, and that we can accomplish your goals. The only time we lose money on a free custom design is if we fail to deliver!
We aren't criticizing the jewelers who charge for these services. What we do takes time, and skill, and we understand that they want to make sure their clients are committed, and their workers are compensated.
We're not saying a jeweler that asks for $360 to sit down with a pen and paper is doing anything wrong. What we are saying is if you can get at least as good an experience, at least as high a level of expertise, one-on-one service, and you only pay if and when your needs have been met... doesn't that sound even better?
It sounded better to us. That's why we made it our policy.

We started our business in an effort to correct the problems we've seen in the jewelry industry, and offer our friends and clients a one-of-a-kind experience. We spend a lot of time talking about the quality of our jewelry, and the efforts we take to not only avoid cutting corners, but to create pieces that help tell your story, and that can one day be passed on to future generations.
Another important difference is how we treat our customers, and the level of service we strive to offer. Designing your jewelry should be a fun, and painless process. It isn't about getting a deposit, and "locking you in." It's about making you happy, forging relationships with our customers, and creating beautiful pieces of jewelry.
